The High Stakes of Moving Water
Temporary pumping systems are a critical component of almost any type of dewatering or bypass project, from underground utility work and large-scale construction to emergency response and disaster recovery. In each situation, the ability to quickly and effectively remove excess water is essential for maintaining a safe, dry, and productive environment.
When the pressure is on and the timeline is tight, equipment failure isn’t an option. Downtime doesn’t just delay a job; it drives up costs, puts safety at risk, and can damage hard-earned reputations.
For contractors, selecting the right pump means being able to complete the job without failure and within project timelines. That’s why rental professionals must provide equipment engineered for real-world results.
Case in point – in Storm Lake, Iowa, Contractor Solutions – a rental and sales company specializing in products for the underground construction industry – had a sewer bypass application in which wastewater needed to be pulled out of the Memorial Lift Station from an access panel located 18 feet above the service pit. Owner Dave Hehr and the Thompson Pump team considered all the system design calculations on head pressure and where to strategically locate and place system components and decided to use two of Thompson’s 8JSCE series pumps set up with a float system, and 148 feet of discharge piping to hook up to the force main and get the job done. The bypass lasted two months, including during December with its cold temperatures, allowing Hehr’s team to complete the job without issue. Afterwards, the Thompson Pump team headed to Iowa to further the training for the Contractor Solution’s team, ensuring they were immersed in everything they needed to know about pump applications.
“Companies could learn a lot from how Thompson Pump supports its dealers and the relationships its team members build with their partners,” said Hehr.
With this training and real-world experience, Contractor Solutions can help contractors better prepare for and work their dewatering jobs; an example of why choosing the right rental partner is just as important as choosing the right equipment itself.

What to Look for in a Dewatering or Bypass Pump Rental Partner
When water is standing in the way of progress, contractors need more than just a pump – they need a rental partner who understands the job and knows how to match the right pump to the challenge. A reliable dewatering or bypass pump partner goes beyond drop-off and pick-up. They become part of your team, working to ensure safety, productivity, and efficiency on every jobsite.
Contractors are looking for application expertise. They need more than equipment; they need a team that understands their jobsite conditions, groundwater challenges, and regulatory requirements, and is able to recommend the best solution for the specific application.
They need a pump that is ready when they need it. A dependable rental partner maintains a fleet that is not only diverse and job-ready but also inspected, serviced, and capable of performing in demanding conditions – one that is rugged, reliable, and easy to operate.
Rental partners also need to be responsive when it comes to service. Things happen on the job, and contractors need someone who can provide real-time troubleshooting and emergency response day or night, helping to cut any downtime.
Meeting these expectations requires experience, dependable support, and a true understanding of the job. To deliver on that promise, rental companies need manufacturing partners they can trust to not only build dewatering and bypass pumps and equipment but also to stand behind those pumps with training, service, and industry expertise.
